Feltboard Counting Games

Here are some of the rhymes and games we use during group time to teach numbers and quantities. As you will see I make most of my counting game flannel board pieces very simply using bulletin board remnants, cardstock, construction paper, felt, and velcro if needed to make them stick to the board. Any questions please ask!

Dinosaur Counting
10 terrible dinosaurs standing in a line
soon began to push and shove
until there were

9 enormous dinosaurs
their dancing was just great
but one was much too spikey
so then there were

8 elated dinosaurs
who thought they were in heaven
but one went away, so then there were

7 silly dinosaurs, playing goofy tricks
but one went too far, so then there were

6 stomping dinosaurs
who danced a crazy jive
but one danced away, so then there were

5 feisty dinosaurs stamping on the floor
one stomped away and then there were

4 fearless dinosaurs swinging from a tree
but one fell off, so then there were

3 thundering dinosaurs
who flapped and almost flew
one took off! So then there were

2 testy dinosaurs tired of all the fun
one went home, so then there was

1 weary dinosaur
who soon began to snore
his friends sneaked up behind him
and suddenly yelled ROAR!

Race Car Counting

Friend Counting
Six good friends went out to play
it was a bright and sunny day.
(child’s name) said, "I can't play".
(remove one from the board) How many are left?
then there were 5 friends left to play.
Continue counting down until all the children have been removed.

Sometimes I do this activity by having all the children stand up and hold hands. When a child's name is removed from the board I have that child either sit down, be excused to go wash up for lunch, go outside, transition to the next activity, etc. until all the children have been taken away.

Firefighter Counting
Five little firefighters standing in a row.
Ring goes the bell... Down the pole one goes.
(Remove one and place on firetruck.)
How many are left?
(Repeat until none are left.)

They jumped on the firetruck and put out the fires.
Now they're back home..., but they sure are tired.

Turkey Count Down
5 little turkeys were standing by a door
one saw some corn, and then there were four.
Run, Run, Run far away. Soon it will be Thanksgiving Day!

4 little turkeys flew up in a tree
one fell down and then there were three.
Run, Run, Run far away. Soon it will be Thanksgiving Day!

3 little turkeys gobbled as they do
a dog chased one and then there were two.
Run, Run, Run far away. Soon it will be Thanksgiving Day!

2 little turkeys strutting in the sun
the wind came along and then there was one.
Run, Run, Run far away. Soon it will be Thanksgiving Day!

1 little turkey saw a farmer come
He ran far away and then there was NONE!

Make several Turkey handprints out of cardstock or construction paper and number them from one to five. Use them with the following rhyme at circle time. A velcro dot on the back will make them stick to a flannel board.

5 little Snowmen Felt Board Countdown

5 litle men made of snow
5 little snowmen standing in a row.
Out came the sun and stayed all day (place sun next to one snowman)
...and one little snowman melted away.
How many are left?(count)
Repeat until all snowmen have melted away!

This is also fun to have the children stand up and be the snowmen. Count them down as above. The teacher holds up a sun over each child's head and he will sit down when you say he "melted" away!
