"Aa" is for Apple Necklaces
Cut apple shape out of construction paper or use white cardstock and let the children color them.

Write the letter on the apple. Older children can try to write the letter themselves.

Cut straws into one inch lengths and string onto yarn with the construction paper apples to make a necklace.

Five Little Apples

Cut small apple shapes out of construction paper.

Give children the apple shapes, stems, and leaves to glue together onto a sheet of construction paper.

"Aa" is for Apple Puppets

Use two medium size apple shapes cut out of card stock or index paper and let the children color them.

Write the letter on the apple.

Glue apples back to back onto a craft stick to make a fun puppet to practice recognizing the letter A.

"Aa" is for Aliens

Cut a circle shape out of green construction paper.
Give children glue, eyes, and markers and let them create their own Aliens.

Cut 3 ovals in 3 sizes out of black construction paper.

Let children glue together into the shape of an ant.

Add wiggle eyes then use scraps of construction paper to make 2 antenae and six legs.

We used these at circle time and sang along with the song "The Ants go Marching", and "The Wiggles" "Little Brown Ant".
Oval Ants

"A" is for Applesauce

Make homemade applesauce!

Peel apples, making the skin as long as possible so that you can invite the children to dunk the peel into a mixture of cinnamon & sugar, then eat the peels.

Core & cut apples into quarters - ask the children to help cut the fruit using plastic knives.

Place the apples in a saucepan or crock pot with a small amount of water.

Cover and simmer until the apples are tender, about 30 minutes.

Stir occasionally while cooking.

Allow to cool and mash with a potato masher or in a blender.

Add a small amount of cinnamon and sugar to taste.

Alphabet Collage Books

During the school year we will make a page for every letter, number, shape, and color we are learning. Each week children will put their new collage pages into a binder kept at home. Parents are encouraged to use the binder to review the pages with their child regularly. At the end of the year the children will have a nice memento of their preschool year as well a a complete alphabet, number, color, and shape book.

Apple prints, cut a small apple in half and use paint to stamp all over the page.

Find things in magazines that start with A.

Letter A Sponge Painting
Invest in some Alphabet and misc. sponges for crafts like this, available from school supply stores. You can sometimes find them at hobby stores, $1 store, or Walmart. We use ours to make a page like this for every letter we are learning from September through May. Parents are encouraged to take them home and post them where the child can see and practice every day. When we finish the entire alphabet they can make them into a book or put them into a binder (You will need to cut down the construction paper if you want to put them into a binder.

Group Time Activity

"Aa" is for Acting Like Animals
