"Aa" is for Apple Necklaces

Cut apple shape out of red construction paper or use white cardstock and let the children color them. Write the letter on the apple. String colored pasta or cut straws with the little apples to make a necklace.

Five Little Apples

Cut small apple shapes, stems, and leaves for each child to glue onto construction paper.

"Aa" is for Apple Puppets

Use two medium size apple shapes and cut out of red construction paper or use cardstock and let the children color them. Write the letter on the apple. Glue apples back to back onto a craft stick to make a fun puppet to practice recognizing the letter A.

"Aa" is for Ants
Let children make ant prints all over the letter with their fingerprints and black paint. When dry use a small tip marker to turn them into these cute little ants.

Here are some other ideas for collaging with letter Aa,
Apple prints, cut a small apple in half and use paint to stamp all over the page.

Find things in magazines that start with A.

Carl's Corner Letter A - This comes with a sheet of things to color, cut, and paste to the letter.

Oval Ants

Cut 3 ovals in 3 sizes, glue together, add 2 antenae, and six legs. We used these at circle time and sang along with the song "The Ants go Marching", and "The Wiggles" "Little Brown Ant".

"Aa" is for Aliens

Cut a circle shape out of green construction paper. Let children create their own Aliens.

Letter A Sponge Painting
Invest in some Alphabet and misc. sponges for crafts like this, available from school supply stores. You can sometimes find them at hobby stores, $1 store, or Walmart. We use ours to make a page like this for every letter we are learning from September through May. Parents are encouraged to take them home and post them where the child can see and practice every day. When we finish the entire alphabet they can make them into a book or put them into a binder (You will need to cut down the construction paper if you want to put them into a binder.

"A" is for Applesauce

Make homemade applesauce! Peel apples, making the skin as long as possible. Invite the children to dunk the peel into a mixture of cinnamon & sugar, then eat the peels. Core & cut apples into quarters - ask the children to help cut the fruit using plastic knives. Place the apples in a saucepan or crock pot with a small amount of water. Cover and simmer until the apples are tender, about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally while cooking. Allow to cool and mash with a potato masher or in a blender. Add a small amount of cinnamon and sugar to taste. Serve in paper cups.

Group Time Activity

"Aa" is for Acting Like Animals
Have children stand up. Explain that you will call out the names of different animals. If the animal's name begins with the a sound they should act like that animal or make its sound. If the object's name does not begin with a, they sit down. Some animals that begin with a: antelope, ant, anteater, alley cat, aligator, etc.
